Your golf cart battery has plates inside of it towards the bottom of the battery. A good rule of thumb is to never let the water level go below the top of these plates (ideally keep it ½” above the plates).

Additionally, the water level should be ¼” below the battery vent. The best time to water your battery is after you charge it because if you add water before, it can cause acid bubbling that will wear away and eventually destroy your battery.
